Croque Monsieur
Ingredients
1 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp dijon mustard
4 slices of sourdough bread or other good quality white bread
4 slices of ham
Salt & pepper to taste
1 cup of grated Elemental or Gruyere cheese
1 cup of my béchamel sauce recipe - link here
25g unsalted butter
Serves 2
Method
Pre-heat the oven to 200’c fan
In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise and mustard together
Spread over one side of each slice of bread
Place a ham slice on top of the mayo/mustard mixture
Season with the salt and pepper
Add 1/3 of a cup of the grated cheese on top of two of the slices of ham
Place the other side on top of this and squash down with your hands
Change the oven to 200’c grill setting
In a frypan that can go in the oven melt the butter
Place the sandwiches in the pan and fry on one side for two minutes or until nice and browned
Turn over and then add half the béchamel sauce to the top of each sandwich and top with the remaining cheese
Place under the grill for five to ten minutes depending on your oven until the top of each sandwich is bubbly and brown on top.
Remove from oven and allow to rest for a couple of minutes and then cut in half and serve
